Why is the heat not distributing evenly in my house?
It is very common for homes to have hot and cold spots. This can be due to a variety of factors and variables we will review.
Why is my HVAC not heating evenly?
Why is my bedroom hotter than the rest of the house?
How do I fix the heat distribution in my house?
How do you evenly heat a split level home?
How do you fix a house temperature imbalance?
Fixing an unbalanced hvac system starts with a diagnosis of the heat load required for each individual room.
A common problem we see in homes in the Bedford & Pound Ridge area, are bedrooms built over a poorly insulated garage. The heating load required to keep a room such as this will be substantially more than similarly sized rooms in the house so the ductwork or boiler zone must be sized accordingly.
Another problem we see is second floor vs first floor temperature differences. It is common for the second floor to be hotter than the first floor. This can be troubling for sleep. Because you want to keep the first floor toasty and cozy but then your bedroom is too hot for comfortable sleep.
A third problem we see is rooms with southern exposure and large glass windows can get very hot in the summer. These spaces require specifically designed air conditioning and thermostat locations to accommodate this type of space.
The location of the thermostat and the number of zones on the heating system should be identified.
The thermostat location determines the temperature reading which is sent to the boiler or heat pump. Unless a sensor is installed, the location of the thermostat will be the location the temperature is read.
Ductwork design plays a major role in where the heated or cooled air is distributed.
Ductwork is the veins of your HVAC system that distributes conditioned air through the home. Testing the CFM (ariflow) and supply air temp is strongly recommended.
It is common that certain vents are not receiving adequate CFM (airflow) and should be modified to ensure correct CFM. This can be due to a crushed duct, a closed damper, or a poorly designed duct branch.
